Suspected drug dealer killed in Imbali shootout

An alleged drug dealer has died in an early morning shootout with police in Pietermaritzburg.

Officers from the National Intervention Unit acted on a tip-off and raided a house in Unit 14 in Imbali on Tuesday.
The South African Police Services says when they approached the property, a suspect shot at them, prompting the officer to return fire, killing the 29-year-old.

A pistol, mandrax tablets, heroin and dagga, were recovered from the house.
Police have opened an inquest docket and are also investigating charges of attempted murder, unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition as well as possession of drugs.
