Suspect in court for planning "assassination" of prominent officials
A suspect is set to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on Friday for allegedly planning to assassinate prominent South African officials.
The man was arrested on Wednesday by the Hawks.
According to the unit they intercepted information in October 2016 detailing plans to assassinate people who "benefited" from state capture.
The list of names include cabinet ministers, members of state-owned enterprises as well as other prominent South Africans.
The names of the 19 targets are set to be detailed in court on Friday.
The Hawks say the suspect is a founding member of the anti-state capture death squad alliance and was arrested in Midrand.
He allegedly told potential donors how the assassinations would be carried out and that it would cost R140 million.
The state has indicated that it would oppose bail.
Meanwhile, it is being reported that cabinet ministers whose names appear on the potential hit list may receive extra security protection from the police's VIP protection unit.
