The suspect was found on Table Mountain.

There have been at least four rape cases in the Rhodes Memorial area in recent months.

In the latest attack, a female UCT student was raped while out jogging on Tuesday evening.

The arrest may be a major breakthrough for detectives searching for a suspected serial rapist.

The police's Andre Traut confirmed the arrest to Heart FM News in Cape Town.

"During the early hours of this morning, an intelligence-driven operation led police to a hideout on the slopes of Table Mountain just below Rhodes Memorial where a 35-year-old suspect was arrested on a count of rape."

"On 19 November 2015, a 23-year-old female was raped at Rhodes Memorial and the suspect then fled with her personal belongings. The possibility that the same suspect could be linked to similar cases is now part of our investigation," Traut said.

Yesterday, the University of Cape Town announced that it was offering a R100 000 reward for information that could lead to arrest of the individual of individuals behind the rapes.

The university's spokesperson Kylie Hatton says they're also beefing up security around campus.

"In addition, the university is also deploying private security to patrol the areas on the perimeter of campus and in the areas that we know adjacent to the campus where the rapist is known to be active," she said.
