A 21-year-old man accused of hacking two teenage girls to death in southern KwaZulu-Natal has been remanded in custody.

He appeared in court in Hlanganani on Tuesday.
The two matric pupils were attacked in their rented house at Ngwangwane Village on Sunday.
One of the bodies was left in the house and the second was found five kilometres away from the scene.
Police say officers traced and arrested the suspect on Sunday afternoon.

He escaped later from police custody by swimming across a river after being booked out to point out where he had dumped the second body.
The K-9 unit tracked him down at a church house and he was re-arrested.
The Department of Social Development says it's sent counsellors to the families of the victims to offer them psycho-social support.
