Support for students' families after Limpopo fatal crash
Updated | By Chanelle Lutchman
Wits University has dispatched a team to support the family and friends of seven students killed in a crash in Limpopo.
The students had been returning from a prayer meeting on Sunday night when their minibus crashed into a trailer on the N1 near Mokopane.
The university's Sharona Patel says about 13 students from the Zion Christian Church had been travelling in the minibus.
"This was a trailer of a truck that was there from a previous accident which had not been cleared. Details are still sketchy at the moment and the incident is being investigated by police. The university is working with the police to help the family identify the students who have passed away," she said.
Patel adds the university's working to notify the families of the students.
Meanwhile, the Dean of Students Dr Puleng Lenkabula says the institution will provide all the support it needs to help grieving families.
"This is really a sad moment for the families. I have grieving mothers who is saddened and traumatised about their children. I have parents who have travelled from Johannesburg and have just learnt about the sad loss. I also have parents who don't know if they'll be able to identify their children because they were [burnt in the accident]," she said.
Five students who suffered minor injuries are recovering in hospital.
