Subcontractors linked to Durban sub-stations sabotage

The subcontractors - who maliciously sabotaged several sub-stations in Durban this week - have been identified and will be dealt with.

eThekwini Municipality's addressed the power outages that hit parts of Overport, Mayville and Westville this week, when groups of disgruntled contract workers tampered with electrical systems in these areas.
Video footage and images of burning sub-stations have been widely circulated on social media and via WhatsApp.

The City's Msawakhe Mayisela says sub-stations were broken into, switched off and some torched - leading to multiple blackouts.
He says it appears the subcontractors acted on rumours that their contracts had already been terminated.
He says the municipality's agreement with them, ends next month.
"We are also conducting an investigation internally to ascertain who was responsible for sending out this information which we believe was responsible for this standoff.
"Sub-contractors came to the City Hall to demand a meeting with the leadership of the city."
