A subcontractor has been shot dead, allegedly during a heated argument in Pietermaritzburg.

Netcare 911's Shawn Herbst says they responded to the incident on Greyling Street in the Pietermaritzburg CBD on Thursday afternoon.
He says it's alleged an armed man approached the victim, who was standing at the gate of a business premise and there was a confrontation.
The suspect produced a gun and opened fire.

"When medics arrived on scene, they found the adult male lying in a pool of blood in the front of the premises," says Herbst.
"The 49-year-old man had sustained multiple gunshot wounds throughout his body and showed no signs of life.
"The victim was sadly declared deceased on the scene. Circumstances leading up to the scene will be investigated by the Loop Street SAPS."
