Third-year student, Mlungisi Madonsela was shot by one of the university’s private security guards in an alleged scuffle.

As Vice Chancellor, Thandwa Mthembu stepped up to the podium to address the memorial service at the Ritson campus - a group of students holding placards walked onto the stage.

The placards read  “Justice for Mlu” and “Your blood has nourished the fruits of free education” - in reference to Madonsela.

The group of students turned to Mthembu, and moved closer to him so he could read their statements.

The crowd began singing struggle songs and prevented Mthembu from speaking. Some jeered at Mthembu as stood silent at the podium.

At this point - Madonsela’s family got up to leave.

As Mthembu left the podium - the singing turned into cheers. Leaders of the EFF Student Command had to hold back a group of students who had charged towards him.

EFF provincial chairperson, Vusi Khoza could be heard saying they won’t let murderers speak today.
