Students hinder DUT VC's address at Madonsela memorial
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
Students wearing EFF regalia have prevented DUT's Vice Chancellor from speaking at the memorial service of a student, who died after being shot outside the Steve Biko campus last week.
Third-year student, Mlungisi Madonsela was shot by one of the university’s private security guards in an alleged scuffle.
As Vice Chancellor, Thandwa Mthembu stepped up to the podium to address the memorial service at the Ritson campus - a group of students holding placards walked onto the stage.
The placards read “Justice for Mlu” and “Your blood has nourished the fruits of free education” - in reference to Madonsela.
The group of students turned to Mthembu, and moved closer to him so he could read their statements.
The crowd began singing struggle songs and prevented Mthembu from speaking. Some jeered at Mthembu as stood silent at the podium.
