Students charged for serious crimes must face the music: Nzimande

Asked about DUT student activist, Bonginkosi Khanyile who has been behind bars since September last year, the Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande says the matter is beyond his influence and is in the hands of the law.

The Minister addressed journalists after his visit to the Umgungundlovu TVET College in Pietermaritzburg yesterday. 

He says students who are arrested and implicated in violent protest action will have to face the full might of the law.

"Society must also assist us as the media. If your neighbour stabs your child, you expect that neighbour to face the music. We are not going to say because he or she is my neighbour, they will have to be treated differently," he said.

He has reiterated that protest action could threaten the higher education system.
