Hundreds of people have packed a large marquee erected at a sports field near slain ANC Umzimkhulu councillor, Sindiso Magaqa's home.
His memorial service is being held there.
Magaqa was shot two months ago along with two other councillors he was travelling with.
He died in hospital this month.
Grey skies along with cold and wet conditions prevail in Umzimkhulu - symbolic of the mourning period for the Magaqa family.
Mourners have arrived in their numbers, which is a testament to Magaqa’s popularity. There's also a heavy police presence at the venue.
