Strike looms in security sector
Updated | By Sandile Zikhali
Private security personnel are threatening to down tools.
Workers belonging to union SATAWU are at loggerheads with security firms over pay. Negotiations began last month but hit a deadlock last week. Employers are offering a 1,1% wage increase.
SATAWU’s Zanele Sabela says they want a better deal.
"As labour we are looking for salary adjustments so that a Grade C security personnel would be paid R7 500. Currently they are paid R 4 377", she said.
"This is why we are saying it looks like a strike will be unavoidable if you consider the gap between the two salary amounts", Sabela said.
If the industrial action goes ahead it could lead to security exposure for places like shopping malls, residential properties, universities and public-sector facilities.
