Over the weekend, a storm damaged more than 200 houses in Nquthu in northern KZN - with one person being killed by a lightning strike.

Eleven others suffered various injuries in Msinga.

The department says no other areas were affected by heavy rains.

Spokesperson, Msawakhe Mayisela says MEC, Nomusa Dube-Ncube has urged members of the public to be extra cautious as the rainy season is upon us.

"Our province is synonymous with their natural disasters especially this time of the year. She'salso assuring the people of KwaZulu-Natal that our disaster management teams are always on standby and they are well equipped," he said.

Meanwhile, the KwaZulu-Natal Agricultural Union says farmers in the northern parts of the province continue to struggle despite the recent rainfall.

Kwanalu CEO, Sandy Lamarque says farmers in Dundee, Vryheid, Utrecht and Paul Pietersburg have received little or no rain.

Where there has been rain - it has not been falling in the catchments areas.

Lamarque says farmers are feeling the pressure as many don't have water reserves.

"It is of concern to obviously get crops and things produced in time for the festive season. It's going to be a challenge without water and obviously the live stock farmers still are also battling with respect to feed, fodder etcetera for their animals so a lot of farmers have reduced livestock herds and will have to start rebuilding when they are able to do so," she said.
