Storm descends on Western Cape

A storm has landed in the Western Cape with fresh gale winds of nearly 70km per hour and heavy rain's pounding the province.

The City of Cape Town's Disaster Risk Management Centre says they've responded to emergencies in the Delft, Mfuleni and Strand areas.

Two people were injured when the roof of their home was blown off in Lavender Hill.

Trees were uprooted in Durbanville, Delft, Platterkloof and Plumstead areas while reports of flooding have come through in Knysna snd Grabouw which has led to road closures. 

It's also understood that the extreme weather has also cut power to parts of Athlone, Goodwood, Boston and Parow Valley.


Disaster Risk management spokesperson, Charlotte Powell says they have received numerous report of roofs damaged or blown away.

"Trees were uprooted, some [areas have experienced] power outages. The disaster management centre will be monitoring high risk areas and vulnerable communities to coordinate emergency response," she said.

Meanwhile, the Airports Company SA says airports in Cape Town, George, East London & Port Elizabeth have been put on alert. ACSA says the necessary preparations have been put in place to ensure staff are safe and that possible spills, leaks or flooding are dealt with swiftly.
