Stokvel members warned to be cautious
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
Police have urged members of stokvels and others who plan to take large sums of money to and out of the bank to be vigilant as they could be targeted by criminals.
On Saturday, Warrant Officer Niren Ramsaroop was shot dead, apparently by a robbery suspect he was trying to arrest.
This after three women had told Ramsaroop the R110 000 stokvel money they had just withdrawn from a bank had been stolen.
Spokesperson Thulani Zwane is advising stokvels to rather make use of EFTs.
He says should there be a need to physically carry money for depositing or after withdrawing then extra caution should be exercised.
''They must report any suspicious looking people who are looking at them suspiciously or following them.
''They must make sure that they report this immediately, at the nearest police station,'' he said.
