Stellenbosch University upholds Theuns du Toit's expulsion

Former Stellenbosch University student Theuns du Toit has lost his appeal against the decision to expel him from the institution.
Du Toit, who was a first-year law student, was expelled from the University of Stellenbosch after he was found guilty of contravening the disciplinary code of students.
Du Toit made international headlines after he was captured on video urinating on the desk and belongings of student Babalo Ndwayana.
Ndwayana also laid a criminal charge against Du Toit.
The 19-year-old contested his suspension after he was found guilty of breaching the student code after urinating on a fellow student's property.
He has turned to the Independent Disciplinary Appeals Committee, arguing that his permanent suspension is not an appropriate sanction.
But the university's committee maintained that the expulsion was appropriate.
"Reviewing the facts of the case in the appeal, the Disciplinary Appeal Committee (DAC), led by an independent advocate, evaluated the evidence at hand and found that the expulsion was an appropriate sanction for the transgression as found in the CDC disciplinary hearing,” the university said in a statement on Tuesday.
“Criminal charges were also pressed regarding the incident at hand. These legal processes are not within the SU jurisdiction or control, but the university will cooperate fully in this regard.
"The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) confirmed that they will investigate and prosecute Mr Du Toit for criminal property damage and crimen injuria. SU will cooperate with this process in line with its responsibility in support of the Constitution of South Africa.”
Du Toit has applied to study at Akademia, a private Afrikaans university located in Centurion.
