Petrol will go up by between R2.33 (95) and R2.43 (93) a litre.

Diesel will cost between R1.07 and R1.10 more a litre while illuminating paraffin will increase by R1.56 cents a litre.

Spokesperson Robert Maake says there are various factors at play when it comes to the fuel price.

"Firstly the weaker rand against the US dollar which contributed around R1 on the fuel prices per litre and also the higher oil prices which led to the higher prices of finished product and also the demand for petrol in the northern hemisphere."

"You will know that they are in their summer season now so that is why the price of petrol is increasing much higher than that of diesel."

The hike, although steep, is not as much as expected after Treasury announced an extension to the temporary reduction in the fuel levy by a further two months.

The levy will be reduced by R1.50 for one more month, whereafter it will be reduced to 75c in July.

Treasury says the relief will come to an end in August.
