Steenhuisen: DA focused on votes, ‘will worry about coalitions tomorrow’
As ordinary South Africans headed out to cast their vote in the local government elections on Monday, they were joined by the political leaders all hoping to find favour at the ballot box.
Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuisen, who cast his vote at Northwood Boys High School in Durban, said the DA has been focused on getting votes in the past few months and not on any possible coalitions.
“The focus has been on getting votes in the box today. The focus on coalitions will happen on the 2nd of November once the election has taken place.”
Speaking to media, Steenhuisen said the primary goal is to get a majority, but they will worry about coalitions from Tuesday.
“We will worry about coalitions tomorrow. We start looking at who we will work with and who we won’t work with after tomorrow.
“But as I said we won’t be going into coalition with any body who doesn’t share our core values and principles. We learnt that lesson in Johannesburg with the EFF.”
He added the DA has learnt from past mistakes and forming coalitions with parties without seeing eye-to-eye with them.
“Getting into bed with a party that does not share those values and principles, always ends badly. We learnt a lot over the last five years around coalitions and coalition management and we certainly go into these elections with our eyes wide open.”
