Stats SA to partner with civil society to count homeless during national census
Updated | By Xolani Khumalo
Statistics South Africa says it's partnered with civil society organisations in Durban to ensure the homeless community is counted in the upcoming national census.
The agency says the homeless were neglected in past counts.
Raymond Pierrier is the Executive Director of the Dennis Hurley Centre in central Durban, which provides a range of services for the homeless in the city.
He's welcomed and applauded the initiative by StatsSA.

"StatsSA is working with the Dennis Hurley centre in Durban and with other members of the national homeless network around the round to make sure that they are approaching homeless people in the appropriate way that hey understand where homeless people are.
"We are really impressed that StatsSA has gone through this effort and trouble to make sure homeless people are included because they are fellow citizens, they are member of our society, we need to count them and they count as much as any other member of the South African society."
