State of Capture report: Numbers at a glance

Three complaints were received by the Public Protector alleging improper and unethical conduct in the appointment of Cabinet Ministers, Directors and state dealings with Gupta linked companies.

R1.5 million was allocated by the Department of Justice and Correctional services to complete the investigation, which was handled like a Commission of Inquiry.


8 people who appear to be implicated by evidence collected were issued with notices to alert them of this and the potential of adverse findings.

5 State owned enterprises implicated in allegations of impropriety by the media and mentioned in the PP report: Eskom, Transnet, Denel, SAA, SABC.


13 people were interviewed as part of investigating whether the president improperly and in violation of the Executive Ethics Code, allowed members of the Gupta family and his son to engage or be involved in removing and appointing members of cabinet.


44 - the amount of times between 2 August 2015 and 22 March 2016 that Eskom's Brian Molefe called Ajay Gupta. Ajay Gupta called Molefe 14 times in the same period.


19 - the amount of times Brian Molefe can be placed in the Saxonwold area between 5 August 2015 and 17 November 2015.


0 - the amount of questions President Zuma responded to when he met with the former PP on 6 October 2016.

Former Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene was removed 6 weeks after Deputy Minister Mcebisi Jonas advised him that he had allegedly been offered a job by the Gupta family in exchange for extending favours to their family business.


Minister Des Van Rooyen,  who replaced Minister Nene, can be placed at the Saxonwold area (where the Gupta family lives) on at least 7 occasions including the day before he was announced as Minister.


 2 Gupta aligned senior advisors were allegedly improperly appointed to Treasury, alongside Van Rooyen.


According to a letter submitted to the PP's office, total revenues from Gupta business ativities for the 2016 financial year amounted to R2,6 billion - Government contracts contributing a total of R235 million.


PP's remedial action listed include that the President appoint a commission of inquiry within 30 days - headed by a judge solely selected by the Chief Justice. 


The Commission of Inquiry to complete its task and present the report with findings and recommendations to the president within 180 days.
