State capture: Former agriculture head grilled about Estina project

The Chairperson of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into State Capture has asked a former Free State government official why the controversial Estina Dairy Project was seemingly left to its own devices and not monitored by the Agriculture Department.
Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo put the question to former Head of Free State Agriculture, Peter Thabethe who has been testifying on Friday.
Thabethe says what the department had intended to allow the Estina project to have its own internal monitoring system.

About R220 million was pumped by the Free State government into the project, which was meant to benefit emerging black farmers.
Only R2 million was used for its intended purpose. The rest of the money was allegedly was channelled to members of the Gupta family and businesses linked to the family.
