State Capture Commission to lay more criminal charges against Jacob Zuma

The Commission into State Capture says it will lay a criminal complaint against former President Jacob Zuma for not appearing before the Commission last month.

This was confirmed in a statement issued by the Commission on Tuesday night.

Former President Zuma was summoned to appear before the Commission’s public hearing in Johannesburg in the week of 18 - 22 January, but he defied the summons.

Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo says he asked the Secretary of the Commission to “lay a criminal complaint against Mr Zuma”.

The Commission released a scathing statement against the former President, stating that his decision to not appear before the Commission was “completely unacceptable” in a constitutional democracy.

“It is to be noted that, while Mr Zuma refuses to comply with the constitution and refuses to comply and to obey the order of the Constitutional Court on the one hand, he continues to enjoy the benefits of the constitution that are granted to all former Presidents in terms of his pension and the benefits paid by the taxpayers,” reads the statement.

Last week, the Constitutional Court ruled that former President Zuma had to appear before the commission to answer questions and complete his testimony.

Zuma has since made it clear that he will not return to the Commission.

According to another summons issued, Zuma is scheduled to appear again from 15 -19 February.

Failure to appear before the Commission, will mean that Zuma would be guilty of contempt of court and the Commission adds, in that case "further legal action will be announced in regards to his conduct.”
