Stables Market tenants given more time

EThekweni city manager Sbu Sithole says although he understands that some people and organisations are unhappy with the closing down of The Stables Market and Berea Rovers Club, tenants have been given sufficient time to make alternative arrangements.

Sithole has been speaking at a media briefing on the planned multi-million rand Hoypark Sports Academy which will be situated where the stables are.

He says of the R300-million earmarked for the development the city has contributed R7.5-million over the next three years and provincial government has forked out R10-million.

Sithole says the rest will come from other partners.

''We are now at a stage where we believe nothing should stop us from building what we believe is a post 2010 legacy - that will move us closer to cultivating us as a sports capital of the world.

''For example, we are currently bidding for the Commonwealth Games and we have been assured that there's a realistic chance that we will actually get the event coming to Durban,'' he said.
