Spy Tapes: High Court ruling 'a victory for democracy'
Updated | By ECR Newswatch
The DA says today's High Court judgement on the dropped corruption charges against President Jacob Zuma is a victory for the country's democracy.
The North Gauteng High Court today ruled that the 2009 decision by former acting NPA head Mokotedi Mphse to discontinue Zuma's prosecution was irrational.
The application to have the decision reviewed was brought by the DA.
The opposition party's leader, Mmusi Maimane who was in court for the judgement..
"Today is a great victory for the rule of law and ultimately we believe that Jacob Zuma must face prosecution,"Maimane said.
The IFP's Narend Singh says the ruling is proof that justice prevails over political manipulation and machinations..
"What is also significant is that in a matter of weeks, it is the second time that a person in high office has been branded as having ignored the Oath of Office. These are serious indictments on these individuals," Singh said.
The EFF's Mbuyiseni Ndlozi says it's time Zuma left the Union Buildings.
"Him being there as president threatens the independence of that institution but also Zuma should just step down. We can't have a president who goes between the Union Buildings and the court of law to answer charges," Ndlozi said.
The ANC says since the court dealt solely with a review of an administrative decision, judge Ledwaba's findings should not be used to infer culpability in any crime or offence by the President.
