Specialist training for drivers of new eThekwini armoured vehicles
Updated | By Jarryd Subroyen
Durban Metro Police says staff authorised to operate eThekwini municipality's new armoured vehicles - will undergo special training.
Three of the four Casspirs that cost the city about R20-million in a controversial deal that sparked outrage from opposition political groups, were delivered yesterday and will be unveiled today.
eThekwini came under fire for making the purchase years ago, but it said that the Denel-made vehicles were bought to deal with crowd management deployment and will be used to assist officers in violent and hostile situations.
The fourth Casspir will be delivered later this year.
"These vehicles will be stationed at the headquarters and will be deployed from the headquarters to all violent public protest action. A training programme will identify drivers with specialised skills who will be trained to drive these vehicles.
"These vehicles are abnormal vehicles and they have to have specialist training to operate them on a public road," Metro police spokesperson, Parboo Sewpersad said.
