The Nurse Initiated and Managed Antiretroviral Treatment Programme was created to enable nurses to administer ARV treatment which previously only doctors could do.

Health MEC, Sibongiseni Dhlomo, says 3.5 million South Africans are on ARV treatment, with one million of those in KZN.

Dhlomo says in order to reach more people, there was a need to train nurses.

"HIV is such a prevalent disease. Now we have over 1 000 nurses trained on this programme and therefore patients do not have to go and queue in big hospitals to be initiated"

"Every clinic, every other area, every corner of the province has a nurse who can initiate and manage patients who are on ARV treatment," Dhlomo said.
