Speaker denies dismissing Mkhwebane bribery complaint
Updated | By Noxolo Miya
Suspended Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane has filed a complaint with Parliament's Joint Committee on Ethics in connection with bribery allegations against three ANC MPs.
Mkhwebane claims the parliamentarians demanded money from her to make the inquiry into her fitness to hold office disappear.
The MPs have denied the claims.
Mkhwebane had initially requested to meet with the National Assembly Speaker, but Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula told her to formally lodge a complaint.

Parliament's Moloto Mothapo says the Speaker has rubbished claims she dismissed Mkhwebane's request.
He says Mapisa-Nqakula wants to give the committee the space to investigate.
"It is therefore important that she does not involve herself in a situation that might create a perception of prejudice or bias, conflict of interest or influence by conducting parallel secret discussion with a key participant in the committee process that's underway."
