Inspectors from the Kloof and Highway SPCA were called out to the home of Thandi Ngcobo in 2016 - after receiving complaints about her dog named Boyz, who'd been chained.

The SPCA's Barbara Patrick says the inspector was horrified.

He was left without water or shelter and the chain was like a noose around his neck. He could hardly move because it had become embedded into his skin. He was immediately rushed to our clinic.

She says veterinarian, Dr. Maryann Anderson who'd conducted a full examination of his injuries - was shocked at what she saw.

"Sadly, the decision was made that we had to euthanase Boyz."

Patrick says they opened a case against Ngcobo after Boyz was euthanized.

"It took 21 court appearances and she pleaded guilty to charges of animal cruelty in December 2018. On Friday, May the 10th, she was finally sentenced. Whilst it may be a victory to know that she has been sentenced, it doesn't help that Boyz suffered," she adds.

The Pinetown Magistrate's Court has ruled that Ngcobo won't be allowed to own a pet again.
