Fifteen people were shot dead on Saturday night, while nine others who suffered critical injuries are recovering in hospital.

Police say a group of gunmen stormed the establishment and fired randomly at the crowd.

They fled the scene in a white minibus. The motive for the attack is being investigated.

Makhura, who visited the Nomzamo Park tavern on Sunday, says the victims are believed to be between the ages of 19 and 35.

He says the shooting took place during the tavern's legal operating hours.

"Law enforcement agencies are hot on the heels of the perpetrators of this crime. This is not the only incident, there was another one where in Katlehong four people were shot and two people died in a legally operating tavern.

"In Gauteng, we want to emphasise that a legally operating establishment where adults go and entertain themselves can not be a problem, it's illegal firearms and criminals out there."

Investigations are also underway into the tavern shooting at Sweetwaters in Pietermaritzburg that left four people dead.
