South Coast residents roll up sleeves in clean-up campaign
Updated | By Nondumiso Dube
South Coast residents have rolled up their sleeves to keep their areas tidy and functional.
It's part of a project by Tidy Towns Shelly to Margate.
The group has been leading clean-ups of the beaches and streets on the south coast.
"We have been battling with dirt and drinking in public for years and also broken bottles and we just decided that we are taking back the beach fronts and the family areas," says Tidy Towns' Stephen Herbst.
"What was supposed to be one clean-up at the beach landed up being us cleaning every beach on the south coast and then it just gained momentum."
Herbst says they are now turning their attention to repairing roads.
He says they're also prioritising tourist attractions.
"We have only got one industry which is tourism. So what we are doing is that we want to generate a family environment for our beautiful beaches.
"We want to encourage families and people to come back to the south coast as a holiday destination, where they can feel safe and be in a clean environment."
