South Africans warned of another steep Eskom tariff hike
Updated | By Noxolo Miya
South Africans have been warned to brace themselves for another double-digit tariff hike from Eskom.

“It’s going to be double the inflation rate, that in itself is a problem because energy is the key determinant for the rate of inflation, particularly core inflation which is food inflation,” warns energy expert Tshepo Kgadima.
“It’s going to be catastrophic for the economy."
As for the utility's bottom line, Kgadima doesn't think the price hike will make a difference.
During record levels of loadshedding last year, Nersa approved an 18.65% tariff increase for Eskom.
It also agreed to a 12% hike for the 2024/ 2025 financial year.

Kgadima says consumers are being overcharged.
"Eskom is cooking the books. Every single invoice that they issue to electricity customers is not based on facts, it’s not based on actual usage but it’s based on speculation because the metering system of Eskom itself is not accurate, It has not been calibrated in many years and they know this."
