South Africa still host of BRICS summit, Ntshavheni says

Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni says no decision has been made to move the upcoming BRICS summit away from South Africa.

There have been reports the meeting, which is due to take place here in August, could be hosted in China as a way of avoiding the matter of the international arrest warrant for Russia's Vladimir Putin.

Putin is wanted by the International Criminal Court for alleged war crimes in Ukraine.

 

As a signatory to the Rome Statute, South Africa would be under obligation to execute the warrant.

Ntshavheni said at a post-cabinet briefing on Thursday that all options were being explored.

 

"Nothing has changed. South Africa is hosting the BRICS summit in Johannesburg. If there are any changes from the work of the IMC they recommend to the cabinet and a decision is taken, there will be an announcement to that effect."
