South Africa records over 13 000 new COVID-19 cases

South Africa recorded its highest-ever single-day increase in coronavirus cases, with 13 674 new infections confirmed on Thursday night.

The Health Department also confirmed an additional 129 deaths, taking the tally to 3 720.

In KwaZulu-Natal, an additional 26 deaths were recorded while Gauteng remains the epicentre of the virus with more than 81 000 cases. 

The national tally now sits at 238 339.

KZN is starting to edge towards the 20 000 infections mark, while there have been 249 deaths in the province. The encouraging news is that there have also been just over 5 500 recoveries.

South Africa passed the two million coronavirus test mark, a feat which drew praise from Health Minister Zweli Mkhize.

He commended the men and women in the laboratory services who made it possible. 

Globally, only the US, Brazil and India recorded more new cases on Thursday.
