South Africa losing R2bn annually to cybercrime
As cybercrime attacks become more sophisticated, businesses with IT infrastructure need to focus on tightening loose ends.
That's the advice from a cybersecurity firm that has been commenting on the losses suffered by South African companies in recent years.
A 2020 report by IT group Accenture has found that the country loses R2.2 billion a year to cybercrime.
Last year, 33% of local users became victims of online threats.
A staggering four out of five South African organisations were also hit by ransomware.
Tony Walt, who's with Port443, says the methods used by threat actors or those trying to harm individuals and companies online are always evolving.
"One of the areas that threat actors are using increasingly is automation. The traditional way to respond to attacks which was manual in nature would suffice to some extent.
"But these days, with the increase by the threat actors of automation it is incredibly important to find ways to respond and protect against that malicious activity using automation as well."
