Some unions are against proposed teacher's license
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
Some unions say they will not support government's plans to introduce a teacher's license in the education sector.
Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga told the Education Portfolio Committee this week that licensing is on the cards.
It would be issued to new teachers and will expire after a certain period meaning they would have to renew it regularly.
Allan Thompson, who is with National Teachers Union (Natu), says they were not consulted on the matter.
He says they don't see value in the license system, saying teachers are already more than qualified.
"It's a good idea in a place where there is no active learning of educators, where educators are lacking the latest skills, but in this country we don't have that kind of a problem.
"Unless if they are saying they have evidence that they can put forward to suggest that educators who got their qualifications five years ago have never attended any workshop, they have never done anything," he said.
