Township residents are especially feeling the pinch as local stores keep their doors closed and private sellers inflate bread prices.

In Umlazi, one woman told Newswatch that innocent residents are being forced to pay double for basic food items.

Brown bread costs around R25 while white bread sells at R30 there.

Nompilo Magwaza, who lives in KwaMashu, says she's also having to fork out over R20 for a single loaf.

"I heard someone in the streets mentioning that they were selling bread, it was a bakkie, so I took my last R20. I went there running with the hope that I can maybe get two loafs since we have been out of bread for almost three days now.

"I was really shocked when I got there that even that R20 I had was not even enough for me to get one loaf of bread because the bread was R25.

"I was so shocked because I know that we are all hungry and we are all looking for something that we can get."
