Some areas in KZN recorded significant rain: Umgeni Water
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
Umgeni Water says the heavy rainfall this week has had little impact on the larger dams in the province.
The utility's Shami Harichunder says the level of Hazelmere Dam, north of Durban, has increased by just 1% while Midmar Dam near Howick in the Midlands has remained at around 45%.
Harichander says several areas recorded significant rain.
"The Hazelmere system received about 92ml, Midmar received in the region of 55ml and south coast, Umzinto received about 320ml and Toti received about 270ml," he said.
He says that some dams on the south coast have reached capacity with dams likely to have water until November. However, he says the reality of the situation is that more rain is needed.
"For Durban, Pietermaritzburg, Umgungundlovu and north of eThekwini, including iLembe, the situation has not changed significantly. This means reduction in portable water by Umgeni Water remains in place and water restrictions are 50% in Hazelmere and 15% in eThekwini," he said.
