Some 1600 acting, deputy principles in KZN
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
There are some 1639 acting principals and deputy principals in KZN schools.

The figure was contained within a written response to the DA from the provincial education department.
A breakdown shows that KZN has 197 acting principals.
In the Pinetown district, 398 people are standing in as acting principals.
It's followed by Umlazi with 309, King Cetshwayo with 245, Umgungundlovu with 225 and Zululand district with 202 acting deputy principals.
The DA's KZN spokesperson for Education Dr Imraan Keeka says that in a province where money is often exchanged or lives taken for positions, these temporary positions should be a cause for concern.
“According to the MEC, the posts have not been permanently filled due to the 2023 Post Provisioning Norms – signed off by her annually - being issued late. This, coupled with the available budget to accomplish what is required, along with budget cuts, has led to delays in finalising the placements.
“Ironically, the MEC also states that there are no cost implications should these posts be converted to permanent placements. She does so without stating how the money for this would be made available.
“The DA is acutely aware of the challenges within this budget. We have, on numerous occasions, offered viable cost-saving solutions to this department. Regrettably, they have fallen on deaf ears.”
KZN Education's Muzi Mahlambi says the department is in the process of permanently filling these and other positions.
