Snares and animal carcasses discovered at PMB nature reserve
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
Pietermaritzburg’s Bisley Nature Reserve has come under the spotlight with SPCA inspectors questioning the deaths of around a dozen animals there.
Roland Fivaz says they had gone to the conservation site this week to search for an injured giraffe. He says they were horrified when they found an animal caught in a snare as well wildebeest and buck carcasses.
"While we were searching for this giraffe we came across dead wildebeests and Impalas. Some of the animals were snared, but a majority of them appear to have died from lack of nutrition", Fivaz said.
Fivaz says they informed Msunduzi Muncipality about the appalling state of the reserve and its animals. He claims the city failed to bring in food leading to the animals dying of starvation. Msunduzi says that is not true.
Spokesperson, Thobeka Mafumbatha says something is being done.
"We do have a problem of snares as well as poachers in and around the area and hence we are currently tightening our security", she said.
"Next week we have a vet who will be coming in to check on the animals and causes of death. At the moment what is coming from the SPCA and other sources is not entirely true", Mafumbatha said.
