Up in smoke: Illicit cigarettes worth R20m seized in Durban
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
Illicit cigarettes seized at the Durban Harbour, said to be valued at R20 million, are going to be destroyed on Thursday.
The South African Revenue Service (SARS) says customs officials inspected a consignment of over one thousand cartons.
They found it didn't comply with several legal requirements.
"Customs officers inspected the consignment and found that the cigarettes did not comply with the legal requirements such as the inclusion of the SA diamond stamp on the packaging and that the health warnings were not in English.
"It was also established that importer’s details were fictitious," SARS said.
SARS has not yet said where the cigarettes were shipped in from.
