Smart ID applicants urged to collect cards

There are thousands of uncollected smart ID cards crowding Home Affairs offices around the country.

KwaZulu-Natal is second on the list of most uncollected cards, with the department urging people who have applied and have not got a response to check on its progress after two weeks.

The department's spokesperson Siya Qoza says uncollected cards could be sent back to the head office in Pretoria. 


"The uncollected ones take a bit of space, but we do keep them for a specified period, after which we send it back to head office".

"So it will depend on the office, some of it will be kept longer because of space, but ideally we would like people who have applied, and it's been more than two weeks to go and collect their cards at the offices," he said.
