'Small group' attempted to loot again in Hammarsdale: Ntshavheni

Looters tried to strike again. 


Acting Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni says the group went to a shop in Hammarsdale on Tuesday. 


"A small group of people were attempting to loot because they were saying they are hungry, they cannot find food. 


"They were quickly dispersed by the police. It was a very small group that were attempting to loot. They have been dispersed by the police and there is no situation." 


She says according to the South African Property Owners Association, 161 malls, 11 warehouses, eight factories and 161 liquor outlets and distribution centres were affected during last week's unrest.

In KwaZulu-Natal, stock to the value of R1.5 billion was lost in Durban alone, 1 400 ATMs damaged and 300 banks and post office offices vandalised by looters and arsonists.


Addressing the media on Tuesday, Ntshavheni said that the jobs of 150 000 people in KZN are at risk. 


She's given an update on the measures government's put in place, following the violent protests. 


"It's not like its a normal calls of people saying we want food and all that and those are the instances that the police and the military continue to be on the lookout for to make sure it is done and was in Hammarsdale."
