Slight drop in joblessness 'not promising' - Saftu

Trade union federation Saftu says the slight drop in unemployment figures isn't an indication that South Africa's job market's on a promising trajectory.

It believes the zig-zag growth trend will lead to a decline in employment again.

"The economy in our view is one responsible for the creation of structural inequality in the sense that enterprises in the economy, whenever they want to make a profit, what they do is to shrink the composition of labour and that on its own means when the new acquisitions emerge.

"What then happens, it's followed by restructuring which goes for the rationalisation so the labour force becomes the victim," says Saftu's Trevor Shaku.

The latest data on the country's unemployment rate was released on Tuesday.

Unemployment dipped slightly by point-3-of-a-percentage-point to 32.6% in the second quarter of this year.

Stats SA says this means that at least 150 000 more people were employed during this period compared to the first quarter of 2023.

KZN recorded the largest employment boost with 48 0000 people joining the workforce.
