Police have arrested six suspected vigilantes in KwaMashu,
north of Durban.
Officers had been on patrol in Mqanduli Road in F Section yesterday morning when they noticed a vehicle with six suspicious looking occupants.
SAPS spokesperson, Nqobile Gwala says the officers intercepted the Toyota Tazz and searched the vehicle.
“Upon searching the boot, police discovered a male with severe injuries to the body,” said Gwala.
She says the man was bleeding “profusely.”
The suspects were also found to be in possession of hammers, sticks and a baseball bat thought to have been used in the crime.
Gwala says the suspects, aged between 20 and 35 years, are due to appear in the Ntuzuma Magistrates’ Court next week facing charges of kidnapping and assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm.
The victim was taken to hospital for medical attention.
“Acts of vigilantism will not be tolerated in our province. We are appealing to community members not to take the law into their own hands,” said Gwala.
She says people who have information to share about any criminal activities should contact their local police station or call Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
