SIU to widen probe into corruption, maladministration at Eskom

The Special Investigating Unit will widen its probe into Eskom after President Cyril Ramaphosa signed a new proclamation and two amended proclamations.

This will authorise the SIU to investigate allegations of corruption and maladministration at the troubled power utility and allow it to recover funds which were lost due to unlawful transactions.

The amendments were signed after the SIU was inundated with new allegations linked to utility, but which fell outside the original scope of investigation.

News of the expanded probe comes as South Africans suffer under stage 6 load shedding, which is expected to last until at least Friday.

Spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago says the unit requested an amendment in terms of time and focus areas.

"The amendment authorises the SIU to investigate in the following areas at Eskom; goods, works and services by Eskom's Kusile, Medupi, Kendal, Matla, Duvha, Arnot, Tutuka and Grootvlei power stations as well as Eskom's head office situated at Megawatt Park in Johannesburg, contracts for information technology and related services and any subsequent extensions or amendments thereof and fuel oil supply contracts."
