There were allegations on social media that it had paid excessive prices last year for some 41 000 tanks, whose normal cost was put at roughly R 4 000 each.

In its preliminary report, the SIU found that the department didn’t procure the tanks as was claimed.

The Department's Muzi Mahlambi says they helped the unit with whatever they needed for their probe.

"The Education MEC has reiterated what he said when he assumed the position, to say he will not be part of any corrupt activities and they will not issue any unlawful instructions to any official of the department."
