Silicosis settlement: Miners win multi-million rand law suit

Top mining firms have agreed to pay about R500-million in damages to mineworkers with silicosis.
Employees and relatives of workers who have since died won a law suit against Anglo American and AngloGold for silicosis and silico-tuberculosis – lung diseases caused by inhalation of dust containing silica.

Over 4000 claimants took to court in 2012, claiming to have contracted these illnesses from working in the mines.
The settlement will be managed by a trust which will oversee medical examinations of the victims.
