Significant increase in reporting of sexual offences: Stats SA

The Victims of Crime report released by Statistics South
Africa on Thursday has revealed that the reported cases of sexual offences in
2018/19 increased to 88%.

This is up from the 73% recorded in the 2017/18.

The Stats SA survey also found that there were about 70 000 incidences of deliberate damage to residential property and arson. Female-headed homes in metropolitan areas were the most likely to be victims of the crime.

The Western Cape recorded the highest percentage of people aged 16 and above who were victims of street robbery, with knives and guns used as weapons.
Individuals who felt safe walking alone in their neighbourhood during the day increased from 79,1% in 2017/18 to 82,8% in 2018/19 while to 35,1 % felt safe walking alone at night.
