Shorter, easier number for Childline

Shorter, easier number for Childline

The hotline for Childline is changing to a shorter and easier number.

New childline number
Childline South Africa

The new number is 116.

Childline KZN's Adeshini Naicker says it's an easier number for anybody to remember.

“Especially a child, it also aligns us with international operating standards of Child Helpline International which we are affiliated to.”

The non-profit's current number - 0800 55 555 - will be phased out over the next few weeks.

Naicker says the new number's the same in all African countries that have a helpline.

"What this means is if a child from an African country finds themselves in South Africa, the number they are familiar with can be used in South Africa and vice versa."

She's urged families and children to familiarise themselves with the new number.

"We are here to help you no matter what the issue is. Even if you  just want to speak or you want to report an adult making you feel uncomfortable, there's always a warm welcoming voice at the end of the number 116."
