KZN Social Development stepped in to remove the child from a home in Mbazwana on Tuesday after concerned neighbours informed the child's mother of the ongoing abuse.

It's alleged the little girl was verbally and physically abused.

The situation is said to have reached breaking point last Thursday when she was severely assaulted with an electrical cable after being accused of stealing a cell phone in the house.

The child's mother left her in the care of the guardian as she was at college studying.

"And it was not the first incidence, according to the information we received from the community,” said KZN Social Development spokesperson Mhlabunzima Memela.

“At some stage, the child was assaulted accused of stealing R500 and, which was later found by the guardian, who had hidden that R500 under the DVD. Obviously, she's a person who has been very brutal and unable to raise a child."

Memela said the law must now take its course.

"It was important for us to act immediately. Hence MEC Simelane assigned a social worker to meet with the victim and her mother in the area where they are now.

"She has ordered the social workers, to ensure that a criminal case is opened against the guardian who abused the child."
