The power utility announced on Wednesday morning that Stage 2 loadshedding would take place between 9am and 11pm today.

It says the rotational power cuts are due to a broken conveyor belt at Medupi Power Station, as well as boiler tube leaks, and low dam and diesel levels.

Chief Operating Officer Jan Oberholzer says last month they warned that plant maintenance which often takes place in summer may trigger outages.

The country last experienced loadshedding in March, when transmission lines between Mozambique and the country were knocked out by Cyclone Idai.

The DA is convinced the power cuts are being used by Eskom as a bargaining tool for more funding.

Public Enterprise shadow minister Natasha Mazzone says the cuts come as no surprise.

"All Eskom's turnaround strategies and recovery plans have amounted to nothing. The DA has warned Eskom to not use the rolling blackouts as a bargaining tool for more money. Experts have estimated that stage of rolling blackouts costs the country R1 billion per stage, per day," she said.
